Just what is a non-compliant diabetic?
A non-compliant diabetic is a person with diabetes that does not follow the diet, and/or the exercise rules or usually any other guidelines typically given to people with diabetes.
So, why write a blog?
I decided to start this blog for a number of reasons, the main one being that I wanted a "safe place" to go to express myself and my feelings about being diabetic. I am also hoping that there are others out there that would like such a place to go to for themselves or to share with others. My History
I have been a type 2 diabetic since 1997. Prior to being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes I was also diagnosed with PolyCyctic Ovarian Syndrome(PCOS). That diagnosis became a part of my life in 1980 when (it seemed to me) PCOS was fairly rare. The most bothersome symptoms of PCOS included the weight gain, facial hair, and lastly becoming diabetic - a typical outcome for a lot of women with PCOS. I was diagnosed with the type 2 while working on my Masters degree and hospitalized initially over Thanksgiving weekend.
I wasn't always a non-compliant patient. Initially I tried the ADA diet without any success. Of course at that time the ADA diet recommended eating about 60 - 100 carb grams per meal. The medical community continually learns new information daily about this disease for which we are all grateful, even those of us that are non-compliant. Anyway, they initially gave me a prescription for Diabeta first. Eventually they (my doctor) added metformin to the mix and I was able to maintain fairly normal blood sugar level for a while. That slowly changed and I became very frustrated and then non-compliant. To make this story a little shorter for the reader I'll skip several years where not much was happening physiologically to me. About 10 years ago I was able to drop my weight from 292 lbs to my current weight of 160. I have to tell you though after many years of hearing how losing weight will help with your blood sugar levels. It did nothing for me! That was very frustrating!!! The only thing that seemed to help my blood sugar was my hysterectomy. That allowed me to maintain a normal blood sugar level for almost a month without any medication. But, alas, that didn't last any longer than the one month.
So now we're on the verge of 2013 and I've decided that it's not really worth too much effort to maintain a normal blood sugar level. I know, that sounds like a crummy attitude, and it is! And yes I know I have some depressive tendencies going on - another side effect of being diabetic and especially non-compliant diabetic. I'm now in my 50's and I am work full time. My life is okay. It's not perfect but whose life is?
What now?
If you feel like it,please share your story and I'll update as often as I can. Thanks for listening!!
